The two-day Summit was hosted by CIBFM with the support of AMBD on August 2-3, 2017. Themed “Globalisation of Islamic Finance: The Road Ahead”, the objective of the summit was to provide a useful platform for leaders, scholars, and experts to share their knowledge and experience as well as to exchange views on current issues in Islamic finance with special focus on globalisation of Islamic Finance.
At the ceremony, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah consented to deliver an opening Royal sabda. A keynote presentation entitled “Sukuk-Traditional and Innovative Strategies” was delivered by Sheikh Esam M Ishaq, Member of The High Council of Islamic Affairs, Government of Bahrain.
A number of other local and international speakers spoke at the conference, including Yang Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud bin Bakar, Founder and Group Chairman, Amanie Advisors; Professor Dr. Obiyathulla Ismath Bacha, International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF); and Dr. Mohd Hairul Azrin bin Haji Besar, Member of the National Shariah Financial Supervisory Board. Topics included Funding Growth Without Debt: The Case for Risk Sharing Sukuk; Islamic Finance in the Digital Age; Sustainable Development Goals and Islamic Finance; and Democratizing Capital for Community Development, Crowdfunding and Wakaf.

Themed “Future Development of SMEs – Unlocking the Potential”, this conference acted as a platform for participants from large SMEs, members of the Brunei Association of Banks, academics and regulators, to exchange views and experiences on relevant topics including Future Development of SMEs in ASEAN; Islamic Contracts for SME Funding and Islamic Banking Practices; and Private Equity Investments in ASEAN.
A number of prominent experts spoke at the event, including Professor Dr. Sumit Agarwal from Georgetown University; Biruntha L. Mooruthi, Vice President of PlaTCOM Ventures, Malaysia; Mr. Mubashar Khokhar, Managing Director, BIBD; and Mr. Pierre Imhof, CEO, Baiduri Bank Berhad.

Themed “Leadership and Innovation in a Changing Global Environment.” The Conference brought together distinguished speakers in different areas of leadership which provided a beneficial platform for the leaders, experts and policymakers to exchange views and experiences as well as to discuss the challenges faced by current and future leaders. More than two hundred participants from both public and private sectors – aspiring industry leaders, innovators, CEOs, market players, senior managers and executives attained the conference.
